Sympathy for Queen Isabella of Spain, defending her throne against her uncle Don Carlos, led to an Act of Parliament in 1835 permitting the formation of a volunteer force to support her cause. The British Auxiliary Legion, as it became known, consisted of some 9,000 cavalry and infantry under Sir George De Lacy Evans.
