John Winter was born in the Parish of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and enlisted for the Coldstream Guards on 16 April 1852, aged 18, a caner by trade. He served 2 years 4 months ‘with the Army in the East’ and ‘was present at the actions of Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann & the Siege of Sebastopol’. He was discharged on 16 April 1862, having completed 10 years, his discharge papers confirming all medals and clasps and noting that he had both been wounded and distinguished himself.
