The bank was founded in 1862 and commenced business the following year. Within two years it had opened 16 branches. Each branch issued its own notes with denominations from ten shillings upwards and including notes for four pounds. The bank was prominent during the development of the Kimberley diamond fields and was the first financial institution to open a branch in the Witwatersrand goldfields
