Ernest Leonard White was born in Poplar, London on 12 April 1896. Entering the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in March 1912, he was advanced to Boy 1st Class in September the same year. Served on the cruiser H.M.S. Dartmouth, September 1913-June 1915, serving in the Persian Gulf and the Dardanelles and being promoted to Ordinary Seaman in April 1914 and Able Seaman in December 1914. Served on the destroyer H.M.S. Brisk, November 1915-October 1917. Served aboard H.M.S. Vindictive in the Zeebrugge Raid, 23 April 1918, was wounded in action and is recorded as having participated in the ballot for a V.C. for that operation (London Gazette 23 July 1918). Was invalided from the service due to varicose veins in August 1922.
