Thomas Chard was born in Chard, Somerset. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 77th Regiment at Taunton on 25 November 1867, aged 22 years. With them he served in India, November 1868-April 1870. In June 1870 he transferred to the 63rd Regiment, joining them in Ireland. With the 63rd/Manchester Regiment he served in India, October 1870-August 1880; Afghanistan, August 1880-November 1881 and India, November 1881-December 1882. In April 1886 he was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. with a gratuity. Having completed his service he left the Army in November 1888. With copied service papers and other research.
