Edward Ring Berry was appointed Ensign in the 61st Foot on 29 January 1847, becoming Lieutenant on 26 April 1849, and Captain on 1 September 1857. He transferred to the 5th Battalion, Military Train in 1859 and was still serving in 1865. He served with the 61st Regiment in the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the passage of the Chenab, the action of Sadulapur, the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat, and the pursuit of the enemy to the Khyber Pass (Medal with two Clasps). He served in the Indian campaign of 1857, and was present at the siege, assault, and capture of Delhi, and action of Nujjufghur (Medal and Clasp). Sold with photographic copy of a portrait of the recipient in uniform wearing first medal titled ‘Lt. E. Berry 1847 Carried the colours at Chilianwala’.
