John Allen was born in the Parish of St Paul’s, Dublin, and attested there for the 75th Regiment on 27 October 1848, aged 17 years. He transferred to the 49th Foot on 1 January 1844, ‘at his own request in order to serve with an elder brother’, and transferred again, to the 61st Foot, on 1 March 1845. He was finally discharged in the rank of Colour-Sergeant on 15 July 1865, ‘being unfit for further service’. Sold with copied discharge papers.
