William Gordon Shute was appointed Ensign in the 28th Foot, by purchase, on 26 November 1847. Promoted to Lieutenant, by purchase, 30 March 1849, and to Captain on 26 January 1855; he retired by the sale of his commission in 1864. He served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, until 25th January 1855, including the battles of Alma and Inkermann, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and three Clasps, and Turkish Medal).
