George Frederick Gardiner was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 23 March 1889; Lieutenant, 10 March 1890; Captain, 9 April 1896. Served with the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment in the Ashanti Expedition under Sir Francis Scott in 1895 (Star). He transferred to the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1897 and served in the South African War 1899-1902 as a Special Service Officer employed with Transport. Took part in the operations in the Transvaal, 30 November 1900 to 31 May 1902 (Queen’s medal with 3 clasps, King’s Medal with 2 clasps.). Shown as Lieutenant-Colonel in 1918 but not entitled to Great War medals. He died on 30 December 1928.
