Joseph Scovell Hobbs was appointed Lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment on 22 October 1881, and was promoted to Captain on 1 July 1891. He was appointed Adjutant of the 4th Battalion on 5 August 1895, and was employed in St Helena during the South African War (Medal). He served as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 8th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment in France from 18 July to 15 December 1915.
