James Rudman was born on 10 January 1828 in Limerick, Ireland, and attested for the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot at Rochester, Kent, on 10 August 1840. Appointed a Drummer on 1 October 1843, he transferred to the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot on 1 March 1848, and was promoted to Corporal on the same day. He returned to the 40th Foot on 1 May 1849, and was promoted Sergeant on 19 September 1856, before taking his discharge on 5 February 1867, after 21 years and 28 days’ service.
