Roderick Gollan was born on 26 July 1815 in Inverness and attested for the 91st (Argyllshire) Highlanders at Londonderry on 26 September 1829. Appointed a Drummer on 1 August 1831, he was advanced to Drum Major on 7 April 1840, and served with the Regiment during the Second Kaffir War, 1846-47. he was discharged, having latterly served on the staff of the Cambridgeshire Militia, on 15 June 1855, after 21 years and 159 days’ service.
