John Conway was born at Liscarrell, Co. Cork, Ireland, and attested for the 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment of Foot on 21 October 1842, aged 14 years and 9 months. Appointed a Drummer on 31 October 1843, he served with the Regiment in South Africa in the Second Kaffir War, 1846-47 (entitled to Medal), and in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny. Promoted Drum-Major on 7 January 1858, and promoted Sergeant on 15 April of that year, he died in service at Devonport on 8 March 1862.
