Charles Higgins was born in Cam, Gloucestershire, and attested for the Scots Fusilier Guards at London on 16 May 1836, aged 12 years. Appointed a Drummer in April 1839, he transferred to the 75th Regiment in April 1849 and was promoted Drum Major in April 1849. He was discharged at Aldershot on 19 October 1864, having served in India for over 12 years.
