China 1857-60, 1 clasp, Canton 1857 (Drum Major Chas. Woods. 59th. Regt.) officially impressed naming, suspension claw reaffixed, edge bruise and contact marks, nearly very fine £140-180

Charles Woods was born on 3 February 1828 in King’s County, Ireland, and attested for the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot at Port of Spain, Trinidad, on 3 February 1843. He was promoted Drum Major on 1 October 1855, and served with the Regiment in China during the Second Opium War, but was tried and imprisoned for ‘breaking out of barracks and being drunk’, and was reduced to Private. Restored to Corporal on 3 May 1863, he transferred to the Galway Militia on 23 June 1864, before being discharged on 11 January 1870, after 21 years and 69 days’ service.
