John Cleary was born on 24 August 1846 in Wandsworth, Surrey, and attested for the 17th (Leicestershire) Regiment on 24 September 1861. He was appointed a Drummer on 1 September 1863, and served with the Regiment in India from 12 January 1870 until 3 February 1882, and took part in the Second Afghan War from 13 November 1878 until 16 August 1879. He was discharged on 22 July 1885 after 23 years and 142 days’ service, his character on discharge being recorded as ‘bad’.
