James McMurrough was born in Edinburgh in 1880 and attested for the Seaforth Highlanders at Edinburgh on 8 April 1896. Appointed a Drummer, he served with the 3rd Battalion in Egypt from 14 February 1900 until 10 June 1901, and was discharged on 7 April 1908 after 12 years’ service.
