William Newton was born on 20 June 1839 at Gibraltar and attested for the 63rd (West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot on 20 June 1853. Appointed a Drummer on 30 June 1854, he was promoted Corporal on 13 November 1860, and Sergeant on 31 May 1861, and was appointed a Drum-Major on 16 January 1863. He was discharged on 12 June 1876, after 18 years and 358 days’ service, and was awarded his Meritorious Service Medal with an Annuity of £10 on 10 December 1907. He died less than two years later, on 24 November 1909.
