Joseph Barnes was born on 17 December 1846 in Dublin and attested for the 4th Light Dragoons at Westminster on 17 December 1860. Appointed a Trumpeter on 12 May 1861, he was promoted Corporal on 19 October 1867, and Sergeant on 1 April 1870. Appointed Trumpet-Major on 4 March 1871, he continued in the 4th Hussars from 1 April 1876, before transferring as Bandmaster to the 13th Hussars at Lucknow on 1 October 1877. He was finally discharged on 31 March 1896, after 35 years and 105 days’ service, and died in 1918.
