William Blake was born on 24 September 1796 and attested for the 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot on 24 September 1812. He served with the Regiment in the East Indies from September 1814 until June 1819, and was appointed a Drummer on 25 April 1816. He was finally discharged on 10 August 1836, after 24 years and 98 days’ service, and was awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in March 1837.
