John Steele was born on 19 October 1840 in Edinburgh, and attested for the 72nd Highlanders there on 19 October 1855. Appointed a Drummer on 1 November 1859, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a Gratuity of £5, per Army Order 33 of 1877, and was discharged on 26 August 1879, after 21 years and 8 days’ service.
