George Whitten was born in 1833 in Inniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland, and attested for the 98th (Prince of Wales’) Regiment of Foot at Liverpool on 25 September 1851. Appointed a Drummer on 1 August 1855, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a Gratuity of £5, in September 1872, and was discharged on 22 October of that year after 21 years and 28 days’ service.
