James Hughes was born in 1837 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, and attested for the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot at Preston, Lancashire, on 1 March 1856. he served with the Regiment in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny (entitled to Indian Mutiny Medal), and was promoted Corporal on 20 July 1864. Appointed Drum-Major on 7 December 1872, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and was discharged on 6 March 1877 after 21 years and 7 days’ service.
