Benjamin Chapman was born on 31 July 1837 at Barham, Suffolk, and attested for the 13th (1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot at Ipswich on 31 January 1855. Appointed a Bugler on 1 October 1858, he served with the Regiment in the Crimea (entitled to medal with clasp Sebastopol) and in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny (entitled to Indian Mutiny Medal), and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal shortly before his discharge on 10 October 1876, after 21 years and 71 days’ service.
