James McDonald was born in 1840 in Barony, Glasgow, and attested for the 21st (Royal Scots Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot on 26 July 1858. Promoted Corporal on 1 April 1864, and Sergeant on 13 May 1867, he transferred to the 79th Highlanders on 13 September 1872, taking up the appointment of Bandmaster. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a Gratuity of £5, in July 1879, he was discharged on 31 October 1885 after 27 years and 97 days’ service. He died in 1902.
