John Ancliffe was born in 1854, and attested for the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot on 15 June 1869. Advanced Sergeant, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment as Bandmaster on 27 August 1884, and again as Bandmaster to the 2nd Battalion Somerset Light Infantry on 1 January 1894. He was discharged on 31 October 1908, and died in 1916.
