George McNarney was born on 22 July 1840 in Dublin and attested for the 4th Dragoon Guards there on 22 May 1855. Promoted Corporal on 16 November 1864, he transferred to the 56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot on 15 January 1870 with the appointment of Bandmaster. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a Gratuity of £5, per Army Order 33 of 1877, and was discharged on 26 February 1878, after 19 years and 220 days’ service.
