Richard William Allen was born in 1874 in Dublin and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Birmingham on 15 September 1890. Appointed a Drummer on 15 March 1891, he served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War between 10 February 1900 and 14 October 1901 (entitled to Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal). He was discharged shortly after being awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, on 17 March 1910, after 19 years and 184 days’ service.
