George Ward was born on 7 July 1848 in Stepney, London, and attested for the 91st (Argyllshire) Highlanders at Jubbulpore, India, on 7 July 1863. Appointed a Drummer on 20 April 1864, he served with the Regiment in India until 14 November 1868, and then in South Africa from 19 February 1879 until 6 November 1885, taking part in the campaign against the Zulus in 1879. Promoted Sergeant on 1 April 1883, and appointed Sergeant Drummer on 1 September of that year, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Gratuity of £5 in January 1884 and was discharged on 27 April 1886, after 22 years and 295 days’ service.
