Walter William Ablett was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 1868 and attested for the Scots Guards at London on 24 June 1882. Appointed a Drummer on 26 September 1884, he served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan from 21 February to 8 July 1885, as part of the Brigade of Guards which took part in the advance inland from Suakin during operations against Osman Digna, before transferring to the Connaught Rangers on 16 May 1888. He was promoted Corporal on 9 September 1889, and Sergeant on 20 October 1891, and was discharged on 6 September 1892, after 10 years and 75 days’ service.
