George Edward Waller was born in Calcutta, India, in 1867 and attested for the Highland Light Infantry at Glasgow on 15 July 1882. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he was appointed a Bandsman on 10 November 1883. Promoted Corporal on 28 May 1895, he served throughout the Occupation of Crete, 31 July to 26 December 1898, and was advanced Sergeant Bugler on 19 May 1899. He served with the Regiment in South Africa from 24 December 1901 until 19 September 1902, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal under Army Order 67 of 1907. He was finally discharged on 14 July 1912, after 30 years’ service, his conduct throughout having been ‘exemplary’.
