William John Locke served during the Great War as a Bugler in the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade in France from 7 November 1914, and was subsequently advanced Sergeant-Bugler. He won the Best Shot in the Warrant Officers and Sergeants category in the Battalion’s annual shooting competition in 1922, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 22 November 1927. Advanced to Bugle-Major, he led a party of 12 Buglers from the Battalion in a massed display at the Royal Tournament at Olympia in 1929, before retiring the following year.
