The North Mail and Chronicle was a daily newspaper which circulated in the Northumberland area. It is believed that medals were awarded for annual competitions amongst the Volunteer Life Brigades and Coastguard Auxiliary Life Saving Companies along the N.E. coast of England, based on the speed and efficiency of operating the rocket apparatus.
