Ernest Harston was born in Stockton, Durham, and attested for the 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment at Middlesborough, in February 1900. He served with the battalion during the Second Boer War, and was injured along with 23 other men of the battalion, as a result of a collision between two armoured trains near Burghersdorp, 31 January 1902. He purchased his own discharge, 6 May 1903.
