William Sommerville was born in Galway, Ireland, and attested for the 19th Foot at Bengal, aged 13 years 7 months, in October 1863. During the course of his service he advanced to the rank of Sergeant, but due to constant poor discipline and several periods of imprisonment ended his service as a Private when he was discharged 22 December 1885, having served 22 years and 81 days with the Colours.
