Richard Rusted was born in Metfield, Norfolk (now in Suffolk), and attested for the Yorkshire Regiment at Malton, in March 1899. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Second Boer War, and received a ‘gunshot wound left thigh’ at Paardeberg, 23 February 1900. He was discharged ‘Medically Unfit’, 30 November 1900.
