Philip Augustine Burton was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, Special Reserve, 10 September 1916. He served during the Great War as Acting Captain attached British Mission to Portuguese Corps. The latter being under the overall command of Major-General C. A. Ker. Burton advanced to Lieutenant, 10 March 1918.
