William E. Varney served as Sergeant with the British Red Cross Society during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. He was stationed at Unit I in Turkey, under the command of Major C. H. M. Doughty-Wylie (who was to be awarded a Posthumous V.C. for his gallantry at Gallipoli) and Mrs Doughty-Wylie who served as Superintending Sister. Varney served during the Great War as Battery Sergeant Major with the 58th Brigade, Royal Artillery in the Egyptian theatre of war from 2 April 1915.
