D.C.M. London Gazette 21 June 1916:
‘For conspicuous good work and devotion to duty. He has always chosen the most dangerous tasks and done them well.’
James Silcox served with the 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers during the Great War on the Western Front from 17 July 1915, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the run up to the Battle of the Somme whilst serving with the 5th Battalion, described by The History of the South Wales Borderers, by Captain C. T. Atkinson, as ‘a very well-merited reward’. He was discharged on 17 July 1918.
