Warrant for the Iron Crown Order of the 1st Class conferred on Lieutenant-General Sir John French by the Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary on 23rd July 1904. Foolscap, pre-printed with additional matter in ink, embossed seal of the order to top left. Creased, sl. marginal tears. Together with: War Office letter forwarding the insignia of the order and granting permission to accept the decoration and Buckingham Palace letter dated 29th Sept. 1904: “I am commanded to inform you that His Majesty is happy to give you private permission to wear the Insignia of the Order of the Iron Crown of Austria… whenever you are in the presence of Their Majestys, or the Emperor of Austria, or any Member of the Royal Family of Austria…” signed “Knollys” (Lord Knollys, Private Secretary to King Edward VII) and initialled by the recipient: “Receipt ackd. JF 29/10.”, folded, near very good £200-300
