Richard Blizzard Power was born in 1827 and was appointed Asssitant Surgeon in the Navy on 7 September 1847. He served aboard H.M.S. Wellesley in North America and the West Indies, 1849-51, and aboard Boscawen, Guard Ship at Chatham, 1851-52. He was appointed to H.M.S. Sanspareil on 5 June 1852 and served in the Mediterranean and in the Crimea. He was present in this ship at the bombardment of Fort Constantine at Sebastopol, on 17 October 1854. The ships fought from 1.30pm until 6.30pm when they ran out on ammunition and retired. The Sanspareil was hit several times, the most serious being an explosive shell which killed nine men serving on the forecastle gun. In July 1855 he was appointed to the Victory at Portsmouth, for service with the Portsmouth Division of Royal Marines. He died in Haslar Hospital, Portsmouth, on 8 February 1857.
