John Charles Groscourt Reed was appointed Surgeon in May 1896 and served aboard Algerine at the taking of the Taku Forts in 1900, being on duty at the time in a temporary hospital between the attacking ships and the forts. He subsequently accompanied the first water party for the relief of Tientsin (China Medal with clasp). In 1914 he was serving in Natal, at Bermuda Barracks in 1916, and in Thunderer from 1917 to 1919. He was placed on the retired list with the rank of Surgeon Captain in October 1923, and died on 2 August 1926. See also Lot 584 for the group awarded to his son.
