Provenance: R.C. Lockett Collection, Glendining Auction, Part II, 11-17 October 1956, lot 1298 (part); W.J.W. Potter Collection; G.V. Doubleday Collection, Glendining Auction, 7-8 June 1972, lot 438; SNC December 2003 (HS 1431); bt Spink January 2004.
From its punctuation and lettering, Lawrence and Doubleday describe this coin as a series E/G mule, while the cataloguer of the Lockett collection included it in a lot of five series G groats, dating it to the mid- to late-1350s. Either way, the crown punch harks back to the excessively rare series B coins with crowns in all four reverse angles, conventionally dated to the summer of 1351
