Timothy Dunne was born in the Parish of Castlebrack, Mountmellick, Queen’s County, and attested for the 43rd Light Infantry at Maryborough on 11 February 1840, aged 21. He transferred to the 29th Foot on 1 April 1842, was promoted to Corporal on 8 June 1844, and to Sergeant on 2 January 1846. He served in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, and was present at the battles of Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon (Medal with Clasp). He served also in the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, including the Passage of the Chenab and battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps). He was discharged at Dublin on 23 March 1861, being ‘unfit for further service’, suffering from ‘chronic bronchitis, the effect of long service in India, not attributable to neglect, vice or intemperance.’ Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
