Lindsay Farrington was born at Meerut, India, on 7 February 1826. He was a cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from where he was gazetted as an Ensign into the 86th Foot on 23 June 1843, aged 17 years 4 months. He transferred to the 39th Foot on 4 August 1843, and was promoted to Lieutenant on 27 September 1844. He exchanged into the 29th Foot on 22 February 1845, and was appointed Adjutant on 1 March 1850. The dates of his subsequent promotions in the 29th Foot were Captain, 9 July 1850, by purchase; Major, 2 December 1859, without purchase; Lieutenant-Colonel, 25 March 1862, by purchase; Brevet Colonel, 25 March 1867; retired on half-pay, 31 October 1871. He was advanced to Major-General on 1 October 1877, and to Lieutenant-General on 1 October 1882.

Lieutenant-General Farrington served with the 29th Regiment in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, and was present at the battles of Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon (Medal with Clasp). He served also in the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, including the Passage of the Chenab and battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps). His final appointment was as Colonel of the Dorsetshire Regiment on 28 March 1909. Lieutenant-General Lindsay Farrington died in London on 2 February 1910, and is buried in Brompton Cemetery.
