Militia L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (1844 Pte. J. Woodhouse. Worc: Regt. Mil.) good very fine £380-420

James Woodhouse was born on 14 January 1861, at Netherton, Dudley. He attested at Stourbridge on 10 February 1887, for 6 years with the Worcestershire Militia and joined 4 (Militia) Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. After 4 years 6 months service he attested for the Militia Reserve at Worcester on 4 August 1891. Following the outbreak of the Boer War he was embodied as a private on 8 May 1900, re-engaged for Militia on 25 May, and left for South Africa on 26 May. in South Africa he was attached to the 2nd Worcesters, returning to England on on 26 June 1901 (Q.S.A. with clasps for Cape Colony, Transvaal and Wittebergen). He was finally discharged form 6 (Militia) Battalion on 9 February 1905, after a total of 18 years service. The award of the Militia L.S. & G.C. was announced in Army Order 138 of July 1905, one of only seven awards to the 6th Militia Battalion, which, with the 5 awards to the 5th Militia Battalion, makes a total of 12 awards to the Worcestershire Militia.
