D.C.M. London Gazette 19 April 1901.

J. Royle was killed in action at Spion Kop on 24 January 1900. Details recommending the award of the D.C.M. were published in the London Gazette 8 February 1901: ‘4761 Private J. Royle, 24th January, Spion Kop, ammunition carrier - conspicuous gallantry in carrying several wounded men from the firing line.’

Seven posthumous awards of the D.C.M. are known to have been made during the Boer War.

Note: Private Royle’s Distinguished Conduct Medal sold in these rooms as part of the A. A. Upfill-Brown Collection on 4 December 1991, and again as part of the Dr. A. W. Stott Collection of Medals to the Lancashire Fusiliers on 25 March 1997.
