Gunton Hinde Crouch was educated at Worcester College, Oxford, and Cuddesdon Theological College, and was ordained Deacon in 1912 and Priest in 1913. After a spell as Curate of Witney, Oxfordshire, he was Chaplain, Royal Navy, and served during the Great War in H.M.S. Victory 1914, H.M.S. Tyne 1914-17, and H.M.S. Canada 1917-19. His next appointment was at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, 1919-21, before serving in H.M.S. Malaya 1921-24. Further shore establishment appointments followed, at the Royal Marine Barracks, Eastney, 1924-26, the Royal Naval Training Establishment, Shotley, 1926-29, and the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth, 1932-37. He served during the Second World War in H.M.S. Defiance 1940-42, and H.M.S. St. Vincent 1942-46. His final appointment was at the Royal Naval Air Station, Gosport.
