Patrick Looby was born at Cahir, Co. Tipperary and was educated at St. John’s Waterford and the Irish College in Parris. He was ordained in the Roman Catholic church on 21 June 1914, and served as Curate of St. Alphonsus, Liverpool. He was commissioned Roman Catholic Chaplain to the Forces 4th Class in 1915, and served with the Army Chaplains’ Department during the Great War, attached to the 5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action whilst with the battalion in the Schaap Balie sector at the Battle of Passchendaele on 26 October 1917, and is buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium. He is additionally commemorated on the Cahir and Aldershot War Memorials.
