The Numismatic Society of London (now the Royal Numismatic Society), was founded in December 1836. Its then president was Sir John Evans (1823-1908), the distinguished archaeologist and numismatist. Charles Roach Smith (1807-90), antiquary and numismatist, was a foundation member and the first medallist of the Numismatic Society of London. He received a silver specimen of this medal on 30 July 1890, three days before his death
